Proper calibration of your test system is the first step in ensuring that your lab is producing high quality data and valid results. Current issues related to calibration in materials testing labs include changes to national and international standards, accreditation to ISO 17025, and uncertainty of measurement. We will discuss recent changes to force, strain, and hardness standards, the release of a new ASTM standard for displacement calibration, and other potential new standards. Since not everyone is really sure what accreditation is all about, we will give an introductory review of why accreditation has value, who performs the accreditation, and how ILAC fits into the picture. ISO 17025 requires uncertainty of measurement analyses from testing laboratories. We will give an example of how the uncertainty of calibration can affect the total uncertainty of the test results.

The recently issued ASTM standard, F2516-05: Standard Test Method for Tension Testing of Nickel-Titanium Superelastic Materials, suggests that strain measurement for nitinol specimens can be determined by machine crosshead motion, a clip-on extensometer or a video extensometer. The purpose of this study was to compare the three different methods for testing nitinol tubing. Stress-strain results reveal that the video extensometer and the clip-on extensometer provide for comparable results. However, the non-contacting video extensometer may eliminate slipping and premature failure that are common sources of error with the clip-on extensometer.

Accurate and repeatable results are the goal for any good testing program. Unique characteristics of springs, most notably coil compression springs, can cause errors that make this goal difficult to achieve. You will learn about factors such as extraneous forces, frame deflection and others that cause errors, as well as how to minimize their affects on your load testing results. In addition, you will learn about some advanced analysis techniques some of our customers are using to differentiate their products in the market. These techniques are made possible by analyzing the entire spring characteristic curve (load vs. height) to determine multi-rate spring transition points (knees), spring non-linearity and others.

With continued growth in the biomaterials market, characterization of the mechanical properties of soft tissues has become a rising interest. One of the challenges in testing soft tissues arises in gripping of the specimens. Biological tissues are often times wet, slippery or delicate. Any combination of these characteristics leaves the existing test methods far below the ideal gripping solution. The ultimate goal lies in the fixation of soft biological tissues without causing premature failure or slippage.
The customer has delivered three different samples of medical packaging that were prepared into 1 inch wide specimens for testing. The seal strength of the packaging was to be evaluated in a 180 degree peel test as described by ASTM F 88 - Standard Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials.
Steel welded wire fabric, made from either cold-worked deformed wire or a combination of deformed and non-deformed wires, is often used in concrete reinforcement. In addition to the tensile strength and bend strength of the welds that support the fabric, the shear strength of the longitudinal and transverse wires is also important to characterize.
The manufacturer of a cleaning solution that is packaged and delivered for use in the food industry has received customer complaints that the solution is leaking at some point during shipment. It is possible that the adhesive or the process used to seal the package is insufficient for preventing leakage of the solution over time. A comparison of the strength of the packaging material compared to the strength of the seal through a series of peel tests may provide insight into the problem.
The Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) has the ability to measure axial and transverse strain without contacting the specimen. Such non-contacting strain measurement is advantageous for testing thin and delicate specimens. The purpose of this test was to evaluate the AVE as a tool for calculating Poisson's Ratio in strips of polymer membranes in accorance with ASTM D 882.
A manufacturer of conveyer belt material was experiencing problems when trying to test their product in tension. The conveyer belt samples either slipped out of the jaw faces due to the inherent lubricity of the material or the test resulted with a jaw break. Samples were sent in to determine if there was a configuration available to resolve this issue.
Sheet metal tensile testing applications require the use of an extensometer to comply with relevant ASTM and ISO testing standards accuracy requirements. In some cases, the thickness of the specimens may be too thin for use with a traditional clip-on extensometer. Developments in the technology of extensometry offer metals testing customers other options, such as the Instron® Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for testing aluminum specimens in tension.
A manufacturer of consumer breath freshening strips uses the In-SpecTM 2200 electromechanical system to determine the tensile strength and elongation ofvtheir products. These results provide quality assurance in manufacturing and production, ensuring customer satisfaction.
Sheet metal testing applications require calculations such as yield strength, yield point elongation, ultimate tensile strength, plastic strain ratio ('r' value)and the strain hardening exponent ('n' value). These calculations place a high physical demand on traditional contacting extensometers. The purpose of this testing was to evaluate the Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for performing non-contacting strain measurement on steel specimens.
A manufacturer of ammunition pellets used in a variety of firearms uses an Instron® electromechanical test system to evaluate the compressive strength of the pellets and the type of deformation they exhibit under load. Further, the shelf life of these pellets must also be quantified in order to guarantee performance over time.
Characterization of the mechanical properties of materials used in space flight is at the forefront of research and development activities for NASA. One such test required the calculation of Poisson's Ratio, a measure of a material's compressibility, on foam material used in the construction of space shuttles in accordance with ASTM D 1623, "Standard test method for tensile and tensile adhesion properties of rigid cellular materials".
Evaluation of a pillow's comfort or firmness has historically relied on surveys completed by employees or customers' feedback. In an attempt to quantify these measures of comfort, one pillow manufacturer delivered several pillow specimens to Instron® to explore testing configurations that could produce repeatable data to correlate with that generated from the customer and employee surveys.
A manufacturer of composite materials uses an Instron® electromechanical testing system and 3-point bend fixture to determine the flexural modulus, flexural strength and flexural strain of their composite bars. The test was conducted according to the ASTM D 790, "Standard Test Method for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials".
A method for measuring the residual seal force on a parenteral vial with an Instron electromechanical test frame was described by Morton and Lordi in a research article titled, "Residual Seal Force Measurement of Parenteral Vials, I. Methodology" from the Journal of Parenteral Science and Technology (Jan/Feb, 1988). The purpose of this test was to evaluate the method and provide data with current electromechanical test equipment.
There are two common challenges in conducting high-speed, low-force testing. The first challenge is overcoming the inertial force resulting from acceleration of the upper grip and the crosshead. The second challenge is to reduce the amplitude of the resonant frequency resulting from the combination of a high rate of crosshead extension and the grips and load cell used. The purpose of this testing was to isolate these issues and provide a solution for minimizing their effects.
A manufacturer of copy paper needs to investigate the cause of copy machine failure as a result of frequent paper jams. A Coefficient of Friction (COF) test was recommended to measure the static and kinetic coefficients of friction between two sheets of paper. Because no specific testing standard outlines a method for this type of material, ASTM D 1894 "Standard Test Method for Static and Kinetic Coefficient of Friction of Plastic Film and Sheeting" was followed.
Four different fabric samples were tested using a ball burst fixture in accordance with ASTM D 6797 to measure the burst strength of each and compare values between samples. The test was used to investigate the effect of different chemical treatments on the mechanical properties of the fabric.
Tensile testing of thin plastic sheeting in accordance with ASTM D 882 is a common testing requirement for many Instron customers. Gripping of these delicate specimens is the prevalent challenge in most tests. Stainless steel tubing (or any other variety of rigid metallic tubing) can be difficult to test in tension for two reasons. Standard methods of gripping will cause the tubing to collapse and lead to pre-mature failure of the specimen. Strain measurement is also usually not possible with traditional clip-on extensometers because the knife-edges lead to high stress concentrations and consequently failure of the thin specimen wall. The purpose of this testing was to recommend a gripping solution and evaluate the use of the Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) for accurate, non-contacting strain measurement.
