ASTM D885 covers the testing of industrial filament yarns made of manufactured organic-based fibers, cords twisted from such yarns, fabrics woven from such cords, and products that are made specifically for use in the manufacture of pneumatic tires. They may be applied to similar yarns and cords used for reinforcing other rubber goods and for other industrial applications.
Raw fiber glass yarn products are an E-glass mainly designed for filament winding and poltrusion or as a cable reinforcement. Yarns are treated with silane based coupling agents who allow a high level of performance in cable designs. The tensile test of Raw fiber glass yarns it’s usually done according to ASTM D885.
For this test, we recommend using a 3300 or 5900 electromechanical testing system equipped with a set of 2714-010 Pneumatic Cord and Yarn Grips (5.0 kN capacity). With the 5900 you can benefit from the Specimen Protect function that limits the maximum force applied to the test specimen. When Specimen Protect is enabled, the actuator or crosshead moves automatically to ensure the force on the test article remains within the pre-set bounds. It is often used to protect specimens or components during set-up, prior to the setting of operational limits.
Using a machine with the maximum capacity of 5 kN based on the loads experienced is sufficient. Additionally, our Bluehill® 2 or Bluehill 3 software packages are adequate to perform this type of test.
