Creep, Creep-Rupture, and Stress-Rupture Tests on Metals with a High-Temperature Furnace (ASTM E139)

We were asked to tensile test (through rupture) a threaded specimen at an elevated temperature environment. The test involved placing a 3,630 kg (8,000 lb) load on a 3/8-16 threaded specimen at various temperatures for 24 hours or until failure. For this test, we referenced ASTM E139, which includes a brief description of the heating apparatus to use when conducting creep, creep-rupture, and stress-rupture tests of metallic materials.

To satisfy ASTM E139, we used our Model C Creep/Stress Rupture Machine with a 20:1 arm ratio that was equipped with a Model SF-16 Three Zone Split Furnace, load weights, high-temperature pull rods, and threaded holders. The load frame has a capacity of 6000 kg (12,000 lbs) and the furnace has a temperature range of 575 - 2200° F (300 - 1200° C). This meets the elevated temperature requirements of ASTM E139. A set of Class F (serialized and certified) load weights totaling 600 lbs are also included.

High-temperature alloy pull rods are connected to room-temperature load train components for operation inside the furnace. An identical high-temperature alloy is used in the holders placed at the ends of the pull rods and the specimen is threaded into the opposing holders to complete the load train. The system can also be equipped with Auto Unload controls to stop the test after a pre-determined amount of time.

We recommend reviewing ASTM E139 in order to fully understand the test set up, procedures, and results requirements.
