Fatigue Testing of Pre-Angled Endosseous Dental Implants in a Fluid Bath (ISO 14801)

Pre-Angled dental implants are designed to help dental surgeons make the best use of the existing bone or to remove the need for bone grafting to occur, while providing a secure restorative platform.

The latest revision of the ISO 14801 standard for fatigue testing specifies a method for testing of these pre-angled dental implants in a laboratory situation. The standard requires the implant to be aligned so that the angle of loading is 10° greater than between the implant axis and the axis of the angled portion of the connecting part.

With an array of implant sizes and geometries, angled dental implants can be mounted into a variable angle fixture for testing to the ISO 14801 standard. The fixture needs to ensure that the mounting does not over constraint the implant nor generate large lateral forces that can damage the load cell or the testing machine. Pre-angled dental implants should be tested in ambient air using a frequency of 15 Hz.

As with straight dental implants, pre-angled dental implants can also be tested in an aqueous environment, if corrosion fatigue is expected to occur. The fixture can be mounted within a fluid bath to test the implant in saline solution or another physiological medium and the temperature maintained at 37 °C.

Our E1000, E3000, or ElectroPuls™ linear motor test instruments provide an ideal platform for testing and characterizing dental implant performance. Alternatively, the 8870 series of servohydraulic fatigue testing systems can be used. If studies of torque required for dental implants need to be undertaken, we suggest using the ElectroPuls E10000 Linear-Torsion test instrument or our 8874 servohydraulic axial-torsion testing system to conduct compression and torsion testing.

We recommend that you review the standard to fully understand its requirements.
